REMEMBERING THOSE LOST EMOTIONS

REMEMBERING THOSE LOST EMOTIONS

Listening to the song of Asha Bhosle from 'Nau do Gyarah' –‘Dhalti Jaye  chundariya hamari ho Rama...Pi se milke bahakne ke din Aaye re.... I was recollecting our young days when the young had the heart to respond and appreciate such expression. All is lost now to modernity, technology, urbanisation, IT and to that Opiate Candy in our hand- The mobile.
We are a generation of regrets .
We have lost not only our emotions but romance , and yes indeed Love.
Our ability to understand and tolerate such songs has diminished. We offer lip service.
But first listen to these words. Here I write the full song:
“Dhalti Jaye chundariya hamari o Rama..Pi se milke bahakne ke din Aaye ho..
Jaise thandi Pawan banke pyar aa gayi
Jaise chupke se ban mein bahar aa gayi..
Pool banke
Ho phool banke mahakne ke din aye ho
Dhalti Jaye....

Mein to sapnon ki bagiya mein dolungi re..
Ban ki ban ke koyaliya mein bolungi re
Dali Dali
Ho Dali Dali chahakne ke din Aaye ho
Dhalki...”
Now the situation in the film is that Dev Anand and Kalpana Kartik are housed in a mysterious bungalow in hills and pretending to be Husband and Wife. Dev sleeps in the bathroom and she in bedroom but for the outside world they are a couple. Slowly love blooms. One day as Dev steps out in the morning K alpana offers him a cup of tea which he smilingly accepts. She then asks him to sit ,which he obliges. Silence. Dev finishes tea   ,and as he is about to walk out she say"Shall I walk with you to a distance”,he agrees. After sometime they are looking and smiling at each other and Dev say "Aaj chai Ka Maza aagaya( it was wonderful to have tea today)”.She blushes and covers her face with her hands . Dev smiles and pulls her sari pallu  down covering her face . And then he runs down...The song begins. This is the only solo song on Kalpana. The songs of this 1957film penned by Majrooh--- and composed by Sachin Dev Burman are gems, and this too is a gem, but sometimes a small gem gets overshadowed. This is what happened to this song.
Also with age the emotions evolve. I had seen this film in 1973 at 15year age in a morning show in Kanpur.
The core emotion of the song is:
I have lost balance after meeting my love, I have disregarded my appearance , lost I am in love.
“pi se milke bahakne ke din aye ho..”

The above means am intoxicated after meeting my love..my chundariya is falling ..and I am unaware.
Now such subtle expressions are neither heard nor understood. But those were the days when love was great and it was great to be in Love.
We regularly fell in love with our screen heroine. For days we were intoxicated. Till next Friday...
